    A great video with helpful insights, I was thinking about this time in regards to my studies when I realised I should start applying what I’ve learned to be “satisfied” or to acknowledge it in a way.

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 7 дней назад

      I totally agree. Sometimes, I look at all the books I've read. And I think about where all that knowledge has gone and if I'm only reading for the sake of reading, it almost ends up being useless. So we've got to pace ourselves when we read and gradually apply what is relevant rather than wasting the time on books that are not going to be that useful. We've also got to remember that reading is not the only source of learning and application. This is something I have to remind myself on a daily basis to be observant. When I'm going around doing things working or interacting with family members or friends or even strangers.

    Great video. Very informative, honest, and actionable. I am also an international school teacher, moving from Laos to Indonesia! I am enrolled in the UoPeople MEd. program and will start my first course in June. You mentioned that you are also a teacher. I can't imagine trying to complete this within two years whilst working full time. I'm taking the 3-4 year route, averaging 9-12 credits/year. Did you take time off from working for this? Or, did you take your double classes/term during the summers? I'm really just worried about the the time commitment the most, and trying to take courses when it best suits my yearly calendar. Most sources say 15-18 hours/week. Did you find these estimates to be more or less accurate? Thanks!

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 16 дней назад

      It's great to hear you're coming to Indonesia! I'm living in Surabaya. Where will you be living? First of all, I just want to say good luck starting in June. If you're taking one course per term, it's going to be doable for you even with a full-time job. Why did I decide to take two courses per term? It's because I wanted to get my degree as soon as I could. There was even a term when I took three courses, but I decided I would never do that again because it was almost unbearable. So reasonably speaking one course per term will keep you busy but still leave you time for other things in your life. As for the estimate per week for one course, it takes about 8-12 hours of reading, researching, and writing. I hope all this information helps you to do well in your studies. And please do let me know which part of Indonesia you're staying in.

      Suarabaya! Lovely for you… I’ll be right in the heart of South Jakarta (The “Big School” there). The Big Durian will be hectic, but I do look forward to exploring the city and the country further. One goal is to take a motorbike ride across Java - maybe next summer. And I’ll stop by Surabaya if you are still around. More helpful info from you here - thanks! I’ve been doing the math in my head for weeks now, and definitely want to get past those first 15 credits ASAP, preferably by the end of next school year. I will consider taking 2 courses next summer, but that Java ride looks like a better idea at the moment - hahaha. After that, I will just see where I’m at mentally and physically and move on from there at a pace I am comfortable with. (I believe we get 5 years to complete a program anyway?) Knowing that I am looking at around 10 hours/week now is such a relief! I reckon 2 or 3 days a week, plus a full weekend morning should do the trick for most weeks. I’ve been teaching so long on a teaching certificate/license via my Bachelor’s, that I had almost given up on the idea of going through a Master’s Program. This move has helped wake me up a bit, and your video was a major inspiration to get started. That, coupled with the salary increase and the genuinely important and applicable coursework has me feeling pretty good about the whole thing. I’ve done tons of IB and other online classes over the years, so Moodle looks fairly easy to use. I also plan to print out as much of the reading as I can to avoid going blind from screen time. Again, your video has been a major inspiration for me. You’re a UoPeople hero! Hahaha

    When you said you read different sources to connect other ideas with what you're reading, that's called 'interleaving'. I'm sure you know of that word but it's been shown to literally be one of the best learning techniques in case you didn't know. I came here to learn more about what syntopical reading was so it was interesting you turned it into interleaving.

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic Месяц назад

      Great point! I honestly forgot about the word interleaving, but I've dealt with it several times in education. It's agreed that it's one of the best ways to make connections to seemingly unrelated concepts. Syntopical reading can be adapted just like anything else in life. Not many things are set in stone.

    Hello, an Indonesian student here. I don't actually learn any english from school because i think current method of teaching english is very flawed. In schools, we learn with formulas rather than helping the students get familiar with words, so they know how and when to use them. Imo, it's inefficient because you need to actively memorize the formulas to make a sentence and at the same time, we are learning another too language (for me, it's Chinese). Learning 2 languages at the same time is very difficult. Every English teacher i had, for some reason are not even fluent at English. All of them having trouble pronouncing words like laugh, bought, and thought. I understand that some words are pronounced differently than how it is spelt. But they are teachers, their jobs is to make student to be able to speak English but they are already making mistake on the most important thing. Another thing i notice is that most Indonesian teachers are arrogant. Every time they made a mistake i try to correct it, but they don't even give me a second to explain it and sometimes even deduct my grades for being "too rude", even though i was trying to correct a teacher's mistake

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 2 месяца назад

      You bring up many valid points here as I teach in Indonesia and I have also witnessed many of the things that you mentioned. Language learning is not unique in the fact that it takes real practice in order to learn the language well. It also helps an extreme deal to have a native expert speaker and also a teacher who is intelligent in matters of the uses of language and how language can be applied in writing and speaking in real life useful ways, not just worksheets and memorization. So again. I totally agree with you on pretty much all the points that you made.

    My experience thus far working toward my Bachelor's: the peer assessment has been awful (but then, I believe wholeheartedly students should never grade and critique other students' work. That's why we have professors.) Also, I looked into the requirements to be a volunteer instructor and all one needs is a B.A. That irritated me a lot; I can't imagine someone having less than a Master's grading my coursework. But I guess it's what you get with a tuition-free institution. ... and most students I interacted with barely spoke English. Let's just say "proficiency" is pretty loosely defined with regards to requirements to apply for admission.

      @BookMattic 2 месяца назад

      Hi David, I didn't know that about the volunteer instructors. That doesn't make sense to me if it's for a Master Degree, but you're working towards your bachelor's degree. I also don't like that the discussion and written assignments were only peer assessed, let alone by someone with less than par English abilities. I guess that's what we expect from a tuition free online university.

      True, however, I found that 70% of the time, the comments were very general. The other 30% has valuable suggestions and ways to improve. I even connected with half a dozen alumni on LinkedIn. So when there are valuable people, there is definitely valuable connections and interactions.

    • @webactivex1
      @webactivex1 2 месяца назад

      @BookMattic If you are doing group projects from comments, then you are doing it wrong. All of mine we started a Google drive share, and I would divide up the project among team members. We would then work on a shared document and collaborate to build out the group project. Our communication would be on whatsapp, and we would have to meet and talk regularly to discuss where things were at. It was very collaborative.

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 2 месяца назад

      @webactivex1 Oops, my mistake. I was thinking about the discussion posts. But yes, you're right. The group work would usually be through WhatsApp for my groups as well and then we would collaborate on a Google Docs. I think this is also where I made some LinkedIn connections that still stand strong today.

    Hey can you please explain the admission terms? And the general terms? Would it be academic suicide to take up 3 courses per term?

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 3 месяца назад

      If you are already working a full-time job, taking 3 courses per term may be way too heavy for you. I did it once and was able to pass all 3 courses, but it left little time for anything else in my life. So the terms afterward, I either took 1 or 2 courses. Mostly 2. As for the admission requirements, this is taken directly from Google search: -High school diploma: Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, such as a GED -English proficiency: Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through standardized tests like TOEFL or IELTS -Internet access: Applicants must have access to a reliable internet connection -Application fee: Applicants must pay a non-refundable application fee of $60 I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hi Matt, I apologize for my last message as it was not clear enough. This is my actual question to you: Please advice, it would really help. Do I need a masters degree in education if i have a teaching certificate from Moreland University? I am already working in an International school as an IB DP Math teacher and completed all the IB Math related workshops as well. As you know the cost to obtain the teaching certificate is approx. $6500 and MEd. is $4500. I can only afford one, cannot seem to figure out which one to give priority to.

    • @BookMattic
      @BookMattic 3 месяца назад

      That honestly could totally depend on the school's regulations and/or government regulations. For example, in Indonesia, I need to have a master's of education, and I was also required to get the teaching qualification from America. My best advice for you would be to check with the principal at your school to see whether you need both or just one and which one is the most important. You could also back up what the principal has told you by doing a bit of research in the country that you're in to see what the governmental regulations are.

    Very informative video. Thanks. I applied MEd at UOP this week. I am thinking of 2 specializations to better understand the whole view of students. How many credits did you earn and do you recommend 2 specializations? I am a freelancer so I may consider at least 5-10 hours of study per week.

  • @user-bh8ne8yv6h
    @user-bh8ne8yv6h 3 месяца назад

    It wasn't guided when I first started going. Every class had one major project. This is group work- so I made sure to position myself as lead/co lead- and I got team mates on Zoom (weekly) and talked them into a Project management platform- it was difficult with people all over the world. I was up like 2am... for like 4 weeks each time. Also, people whatapp each other a lot. Also on peer assessment- I learned to attach a link from Purdue showing proof I was correct in how I was assessing and more importantly what it should say/look like. I think it is a good idea for kids too. Show them what you are talking about. I had only 1 professor, that exampled what she was teaching by teaching it that way! powerful course. I had psychology course, the professor didn't even read the material- had no clue. Just like regional accredited university; some instructors are really into what they are teaching and others are there for a paycheck. One complaint: the reading list is crazy. I would suggest less material; but, go deeper in the material you offer. The adolescent psychology program really missed the mark- it didn't go over what you need. Study.com educational psychology is much better: study.com/academy/course/educational-psychology-course.html
